RTCA DO-254/EUROCAE ED-80 "Design Assurance Guidance for Airborne Electronic Hardware" is civil aviation guidance for the development and certification of programmable logic devices (PLDs). The use of PLDs is becoming more and more prevalent in military and commercial systems. RTCA DO-254 has been given the status of a "de-facto" standard by the FAA as a result of Advisory Circular 20-152, in relation to the certification (and hence development) of programmable logic devices such as FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays), CPLDs (Complex Programmable Logic Devices) and ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuits).
This course provides a comprehensive insight into the processes required to integrate design assurance into the development of systems which include complex electronic hardware, as a requirement for supporting an argument that the host system is safe. The course will assume only a basic background in software or electronic systems as the emphasis will be on the processes by which the design assurance is gained rather than the technical details of the assurance itself. It will provide certification strategies and guidance.
